A quote is only useful if it holds up once the truck is in your driveway, so we ask a few things up front: is it a single door or a double, torsion springs or extension, and roughly how old is the opener. Steel, wood, and insulated doors all price differently, and a double door with two torsion springs is a different job than a single with one. That much we can usually pin down over the phone.
What we can't price sight-unseen is anything that depends on condition rather than size, how far a track has bent out of true, whether rust has eaten into the spring coil, how much a panel has warped from a backed-into corner, or whether the opening itself is out of square under the trim. Those show up as a range on the phone and a firm number once we've had a hand on the hardware.
Here's the honest limit: if your opening isn't a standard width or height, or the door was custom-built years ago, we may need to see it before we'll commit to a number at all. Guessing on a nonstandard door helps nobody. Have the door's approximate age, whether the opener has ever been replaced, and what it's currently doing, won't open, makes noise, sags on one side, ready when you call, and the quote you get will be close to the number you're billed.

Why can't you give me a firm number without seeing the door?
Size and door type set the baseline price, but condition sets the final one. A torsion spring job on a standard double door is predictable. A door with a warped panel, an out-of-square opening, or a track bent from years of a car clipping it needs a hand on it first. We'd rather tell you that up front than hand you a number that changes on-site.
